Counter without cashier
Many jobs have disappeared in
recently and many more in next 10 years in America. If they are existing, they
might be in different fashions. There are many reasons, some of them are cheap
labor costs elsewhere, immigration and consumer tastes.
However, the most reason is automation
or high technology to conduct service and produce consumer goods. Several jobs are
predicted to be extinct soon include postal workers, jewelers, telemarketers,
cashiers, manufacturing workers and even farmers.
A digital receipt, credit to
Walmart
Since last years, we saw more than 80%
counters are without cashiers in Walmart, the biggest grocery store in the USA.
It is mean that we must check out by ourselves. The system made difficult for us
at first, but we are getting familiar now.
We not only pay electronically for
groceries, but also could get digital copy of purchase receipt by registration
at Walmart Supercenter. No receipt paper and might save tropical trees for
future generations. In this sense, automation is good for us.
Thanks for this positive post on automation as I often have doubts on this. Maybe as I am almost 60 years old.
ReplyDeleteMany people, includes me have doubt with replacement of human being to technology.

I tend to avoid the self check out. I worked as a cashier for a few years. I figure since the store isn't paying me, I'm not going to do work when I shop.

I think jobs will be reduced, downsized, but will not entirely disappear. At the store, we check out by ourselves, and yet there are problems sometimes, and the intervention of a cashier is needed.

Some stores here had the self check-out counters, then did away with them in favor of cashiers and just this week, I saw that the self check-out is back. It beats standing in a long line sometimes!

Yes, many jobs will extinct in coming years. Though, there is still a grocery store which does not have self-checkout near where I live. Maybe those stores will be minority but still live on :-)

Automated check out stands may be the future, but I'm not sure if the post office will become extinct. How?
ReplyDeleteactually, not really extinction, but reduce due to replacement of digital mails. Packages delivery might be taken by private companies.

You know Tanza, I hate automation or high technology. We no longer enjoy talking with people. People talk with their machines and neglect the fact of enjoying people. The future sucks to me and of course because I'm 69, they will say that I am just to old. Maybe I am but I still like talking with another person face to face. See ya.

It seems so efficient BUT... I don't like self checkout! The machine is constantly scolding me because it did not like the way I put the item in the bag. Really annoying! Also, I like exchanging pleasantries with a real person. I predict people will shop in stores even less than they do now.

Automation has its plus's and minus's. Self-check out can be convenient, but when there's a problem, it's a live person who is the only one who can help us. And that's how it should be :)

I’m not for automation wholeheartedly. Cashiers must be preserved to those who don’t have a smart phone and for the time when network outage happens. Actually millions of smartphone users in UK and Japan were taken offline by Ericsson equipment about 5 hours yesterday. Not so often, but that could happen.

You should see Macy's. I haven't been in that store in years, and after yesterday I'll never go there again. There are NO clerks. Well, one that I finally found with a line around her cash register. Clothes on the floor, not on the racks. That place looked like it had been under siege.
