Formal Elements of the Painting

The Starry Night (Source: Puchko, 2015)

One of my favorite work of art is painting. There are two basic forms of styles in painting, they are representational and abstract. Three well known representations are realism, naturalism and illusionism. Then, generally speaking, there are two abstracts style that are non-representational and expressionism.
I interested with Vincent van Gogh works of art. As mentioned by Artble (2016) that Vincent van Gogh was famed for his bold, dramatic brush strokes which expressed emotion and added a feeling of movement to his works
Then, his paintings style may be included as one of the post-impressionist paintings. It is branch of representational style. This style is rejecting to depict observed world, but the world is depicted based on memories and emotions in order to connect with the viewers on a deeper level.
One of Van Gogh famous painting is “the starry night”. Please see at above. Visual qualities make this item (The Starry Night) my favorite is that this painting portray a beauty of nature in different way or unusual manner. Painting looks realistic but not actually realistic at the same time. This is an example of post-impressionist paintings. Yellow is dominant, even at night. In addition, there are plenty of “halos” made me curious.
Finally, as described by Puchko (2015) that village in “the starry night” cannot be seen from window of Van Gogh during his live in Saint-Paul Asylum, Saint-Rémy, France. The village might be “creative village” only, based on his memory of his homeland, the Netherland.

  2. I am a big fan of Van Gogh and impressionism in general. We recently went to an art museum with our son and it was very intriguing to talk with each other about the types of art we enjoy. Wishing you many 'starry nights' in 2019!

  8. Interesting post! I've read several books about Van Gough and just finished "Van Gogh's Table: At the Auberge Ravoux." His choice of colors and style always amazed me, he had a uniquely recognizable style. Thanks!

  11. Van Gogh had a magnificent mind. The soul of his brush saw things most of us would've missed, if he haden't shared. We are lucky. I can definitely understand why he is a favorite.

  12. The asylum where Van Gogh lived for a while at the end of his life is now open to tourists, with a reconstruction of his room. The surrounding landscape is very reminiscent of his paintings. When we visited, the irises were even blooming, and the trees look like the ones he painted.

  17. He was probably interested in astronomy. In those days, the sky and its elements were completely unreachable, and so appeared a lot in paintings.
Van Gogh's blue/yellow painting 'Starry Night" was the basis to several beautiful lyrics that became famous not less than the painting itself.
